Scafati tomb 133. Elongated burial area with a grave structure and adjoining dirt road.

Excavated at a level crossing of the Circumvesuviana now replaced by an overpass.

According to Jashemski (1968) –

“One day Sicignano took us to Scafati, about a mile and a half from Pompeii. In putting in a new building several years earlier they had found an ancient tomb along the road, with a little tomb-garden, which Sicignano had excavated. It was completely overgrown with weeds, so we had cleared/cleaned it several days earlier. It is located by the narrow-gauge Circumvesuviana railroad: the man who guarded the crossing and put down the gate when a train approached, was the custodian of the tomb. He loved showing us the tomb and invited us to his home for coffee.”

See Jashemski W. F., 2014. Discovering the Gardens of Pompeii: The Memoirs of a Garden Archaeologist 1955 – 2004, (p.153).

According to Kockel –

“The small town, which today has almost grown together with the modern Pompeii, belongs to the area of Soprintendenza Salerno. In the past, however, its municipal boundary extended further to the west, so that overlaps can occur with old find designations n. 250.

In 1964, an elongated burial area with a grave structure and adjoining dirt road was excavated at a level crossing of the Circumvesuviana, which has since been replaced by an overpass. n. 251. It may have belonged to a nearby Villa Rustica. The access could not be uncovered. The very destroyed grave building must have been completed on two floors with an open upper floor and three-quarter columns at the corners of the base. Near the tomb there were two simple cremations. The excavators were also able to find a real grave garden, which consisted of six large trees - Jashemski thinks of cypresses. Four of them were arranged around a small, heavily ashed and trenched pile of earth in front of the grave structure, in which the excavator probably rightly sees the remains of a bustum. No incineration site has been found anywhere else in Pompeii. n.252.”

Casale and Bianco list their item 155 as

Monumento sepolcrale

- ArchSoprint.

This is located at the junction of Via Croce/ via Martiri d'Ungheria / Via Della Resistenza and the railway line. Is this the same tomb as Kockel and Jashemski describe?

Jashemski described this as an “Ancient tomb discovered at Scafati, the tomb was found in a triangular area enclosed by a low tufa wall. The back wall, which was the shortest, was eight metres long and approximately 95cm in height on average. The two longer walls could not be measured because they continued under the modern roadway.
Within the tomb enclosure the cavities of six tree roots were found.
These cavities were emptied and casts made, two were in the corners at the rear, and four were planted in front of the tomb.
On the opposite side of the roadway, which was two metres in width, six root cavities were found.
Beyond this was a planted area with ancient furrows clearly still visible.”
According to Jashemski, “No doubt the entire network of roads connecting the towns that were covered during the eruption of Vesuvius were lined with tombs, which still lie buried under the Campanian countryside. This tomb was situated, as was customary in antiquity along a road, probably a small one that branched off from the main road between Pompeii and Nuceria. The wall of the tomb enclosure along the road was very low; the excavated section measures 20.5 metres.”

The casts of the four trees in front of the tomb are centre right.
According to Jashemski,
“The six root cavities in the tomb enclosure were of varying sizes, but all were tree roots.
It is difficult to identify the six large trees but because of the popularity of the cypress tree as a tomb planting, we might expect that at least some of them would be cypresses.”

According to Jashemski “The area between the four trees in front of the tomb was reserved for another use.
In the middle of this was a tumulus of earth which was surrounded by a shallow ditch.
The burned material and bones found in the tumulus and the strong traces of burning in the ditch indicate that this was the ustrina.”
