Scafati tomb 133. Elongated burial area with a grave structure and adjoining dirt road.

Excavated at a level crossing of the Circumvesuviana now replaced by an overpass.

 

According to Jashemski (1968) –

“One day Sicignano took us to Scafati, about a mile and a half from Pompeii. In putting in a new building several years earlier they had found an ancient tomb along the road, with a little tomb-garden, which Sicignano had excavated. It was completely overgrown with weeds, so we had cleared/cleaned it several days earlier. It is located by the narrow-gauge Circumvesuviana railroad: the man who guarded the crossing and put down the gate when a train approached, was the custodian of the tomb. He loved showing us the tomb and invited us to his home for coffee.”

According to Kockel –

“The small town, which today has almost grown together with the modern Pompeii, belongs to the area of ​​Soprintendenza Salerno. In the past, however, its municipal boundary extended further to the west, so that overlaps can occur with old find designations n. 250.

In 1964, an elongated burial area with a grave structure and adjoining dirt road was excavated at a level crossing of the Circumvesuviana, which has since been replaced by an overpass. n. 251. It may have belonged to a nearby Villa Rustica. The access could not be uncovered. The very destroyed grave building must have been completed on two floors with an open upper floor and three-quarter columns at the corners of the base. Near the tomb there were two simple cremations. The excavators were also able to find a real grave garden, which consisted of six large trees - Jashemski thinks of cypresses. Four of them were arranged around a small, heavily ashed and trenched pile of earth in front of the grave structure, in which the excavator probably rightly sees the remains of a bustum. No incineration site has been found anywhere else in Pompeii. n.252.”

(Der kleine, heute mit dem modernen Pompeji fast zusammengewachsene Ort gehört in den Bereich der Soprintendenza Salerno. Früher reichte seine Gemeindegrenze jedoch weiter nach Westen, so dass sich bei alten Fundbezeichnungen Überschneidungen ergeben können. n. 250.

 

1964 wurde an einem mittlerweile durch eine Überführung ersetzten Bahnübergang der Circumvesuviana ein langgestreckter Grabbezirk mit Grabbau und angrenzendem Feldweg ausgegraben n. 251. Er dürfte zu einer nahe gelegenen Villa Rustica gehört haben. Sein Zugang konnte nicht freigelegt werden. Der sehr zerstörte Grabbau muss zweigeschossig mit offenem Obergeschoß und Dreiviertelsäulen an den Ecken des Sockels ergänzt werden. Nahe dem Grabbau traf man auf zwei einfache Brandbestattungen. Die Ausgräber konnten außerdem einen richtigen Grabgarten nachweisen, der aus sechs großen Bäumen - Jashemski denkt an Zypressen - bestand. Vier von ihnen waren um einen kleinen, stark mit Asche durchsetzten und von einem Graben umzogenen Erdhaufen vor dem Grabbau angeordnet, in dem die Ausgräberin wohl zu Recht den Rest eines bustum sieht. In Pompeji ist bisher anderweitig kein Verbrennungsplatz nachgewiesen. n. 252.)
